Goose's Lorax Prediction Instantly Proven True
Ok, I shit you not, I had not seen this Lou Dobbs video before I wrote my Lorax post. In fact, though the piece was just posted, I actually wrote that last week and had it sitting in my hopper for publication yesterday. But I was informed, thanks to Whimsy Time, that FOX News “analyst” Lou Dobbs has already begun beating the drums against the Lorax for it’s liberal...

The Liberal Lorax
The Lorax movie comes out this week and while I have absolutely no desire in seeing another children’s movie adaptation of a beloved book, I am curiously following the news about the film.
Why? Well, if you haven’t read the Lorax, or haven’t read it in a long time, the plot of the book is basically a warning about the dangers of over consumption of environmental resources. In...

The Eli Manning Debate
Since he won his second Super Bowl, all the idiotic sports news outlets discussed incredibly dumb notions like “Is Eli a Hall of Famer?” and “Who would you rather have, Eli or Peyton?” Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
In short: Not yet, but likely; and a healthy Peyton over a healthy Eli anyday.
The first thing we should do is compare some stats, so let’s get that done by looking...
Woman: Can I have birth control?
Government: No.
Woman: I got pregnant because I didn't have birth control and I don't want the fetus. Can I have an abortion?
Government: No.
Woman: I gave birth to my child but since I wasn't expecting it, I can't afford daycare. Can I have help paying for it?
Government: No.
Woman: My boyfriend isn't excited about sex anymore, because I lost my figure due to pregnancy. Will you pay for his erectile dysfunction pills?
Government: Yes.

Goose's Take on the 2012 Election
Though it often draws looks of derision from my friends, I don’t shy away from the fact that I am indeed a Republican at heart. I believe in keeping the government out of my personal life as much as I can and that the federal government should exist mainly to ensure the safety of its citizens (from both foreign and domestic threats) and guaranteeing that every person in the United States had...

The Political Quotient
I was listening to the Freakonomics podcast the other day while on one of my many train commutes around the city and they were interviewing UCLA Political Science professor Tim Groseclose.
Groseclose became well-known for his research on media bias and in doing so also ended up with a unique way of measuring the political leanings of members of Congress as well as a test which anyone can take to...

The Unending Bar Party
The Backstory
A few weeks back, a my girlfriend’s friend had won a party at the local Howl at the Moon Saloon in downtown Chicago. For those of you as unfamiliar with the bar as I was, the bar is a dueling piano bar with live music and entertainment located in a popular section of the city.
Normally I don’t like to party downtown (as prices are generally more than elsewhere and I...

Week 9 NFL Picks
A bit better of a showing last week, but I wish I had gone on my hunch about the Chiefs. Oh well, can’t win them all. On to this week’s matchups!
Atlanta Falcons over INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
The Falcons are coming on strong and the Colts seem determined to run the table for Luck this year. Pretty easy pick. Expect a slaughter here. Turner owners like myself are quite happy with this...

2nd Quarter NFL Power Poll
At the halfway mark, I have last years Super Bowl participants at the top of the league and its up to the rest of the teams to try to knock them off.
The Packers, Bills, Broncos and Colts all held steady at 1, 6, 29, and 32 respectively while the biggest riser was the Chiefs impressive climb up 11 ranks. The Redskins, however, plummeted 14 spots after some pretty poor performances.
The previous...

Week 8 NFL Picks
Thanks to an overwhelmingly hectic schedule, I missed writing this piece last week. I also missed picking good games as I went 6-7.
Anyhoo, hopefully I’ll do a bit better this week:
TENNESSEE TITANS over Indianapolis Colts
Yeah, at this point I’d pick Lakeview High School (down the road from me, don’t even have a real field) to beat the Colts. Hell, I’d even give the...

Week 6 NFL Picks
Getting double digit wins is going to be tough now that the bye weeks are taking place, reducing the number of games played each week. Thus, I’m happy with my 9-4 outcome last week, though I would have been ecstatic if Tampa Bay hadn’t fallen flat on its face.
Anyhoo, on to this week:
GREEN BAY PACKERS over St. Louis Rams
Do I even have to explain this?
PITTSBURGH STEELERS over...

1st Quarter NFL Power Poll
Generally I’m not a big fan of doing power polls for several reasons: (1) they are highly inaccurate, (2) they are very biased and, most importantly (3) it takes a while to put one together.
That being said, I wanted to do one last week for the first quarter of the NFL, but didn’t have time, so I’m doing it now. Expect three more: one after each Week 8, Week 12 and Week 17.

Week 5 NFL Picks
A 12-4 record last week keeps me in the middle of the pack in my pick’em league, so I really hope I can make up some ground here.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS over Kansas City Chiefs
I really struggled with this pick because both of these teams are just horrible. At a combined 1-7 (the lone win coming against the winless Vikings), this game looks to be pure torture to watch. However, Indy is home...

Week 4 NFL Picks
9-7 is really much worse than I’d prefer to do. Washington really should have won that MNF game. If only they didn’t blitz 8 defenders on 3rd and 22. What a stupid idea. Anyhoo, this weekend has some interesting matchups, including me picking an upset in the first game on the docket. So here we go:
Detroit Lions over DALLAS COWBOYS
Even though it now seems unlikely that Nick Fairley...

sflbillsbackers:
By Sam Farmer, LA Times

Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Buffalo Bills is from Harvard, and that makes him unique. He’s the only quarterback from that school to become an NFL starter. But there’s an everyman side to this son of a rocket scientist, and not…

Week 3 NFL Picks
Week 2 went pretty well for me. I finished 14-2, bringing my season record to 24-8. A 75% correction prediction is great, but that’s not something that will last. With that in mind, here are my picks for Week 3 (home team in caps):
CINCINNATI BENGALS over San Francisco 49ers
Ugh, wake me when this is over. Two terrible teams battle it out in the early games. I’m tempted to take San...
